Coaching is a supportive process that enables individuals to clarify and achieve their goals, identify and overcome limiting beliefs and behaviours and improve performance. Coaching can be offered to individuals or for those people working in organisations. The main difference is that where an individual is part of an organisation the coaching contract is between the organisation, the person being coached and the coach. The goals are usually focused on the person improving their business performance and working relationships. With coaching that is arranged by the coachee themselves, there is no third party in the contract and so the goals may be more personal and individual.
The coaching process
First we would have a meeting to find out what you want to achieve and to see if I would be a good fit as a coach. If a company is commissioning the coaching, the appropriate manager. We would agree how many coaching sessions would be best (usually this would be an initial 3 or 6 sessions), the process and the logistics. We would also make sure that we have a clear agreement about measures of success. It’s important at this stage to make sure that everyone is clear about roles and responsibilities and boundaries. Depending on the goals, the coaching may include a psychometric instrument such as TIFF© or MBTI. Coaching may take place in the host company’s location, at a suitable external venue or via skype.
